Kicking Against the Goads
Scripture: Acts 9:1-5
Then the Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads" (Acts 9:5).
Farmers would use goads to break in oxen to plow the ground. To kick against the goad was painful. The goad was used to prod and to prick the ox into submission.
Saul of Tarsus was resisting Jesus. In so doing he was "kicking against the goads." Jesus had been pursuing Saul, prodding and pricking him to bring him to repentance. On the road to Damascus, the stiff-neck of the Pharisee bowed.
Obedience is easy. Disobedience is hard. Stop "kicking against the goads" and obey Jesus.

Persecution and Vestavia
Scripture: Acts 8:1-4
"Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word" (Acts 8:4).
When "a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem" the family of God increased. The Kingdom spread. The body grew and was healthy. The more intense the persecution became the more grace abounded. As grace abounded, faith increased.
Perhaps the church which is at Vestavia could benefit from some persecution...

Resisting the Holy Spirit
Scripture: Acts 7:51-53
"You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you" (Acts 7:51).
How do folks "resist the Holy Spirit?" By not keeping the word the Spirit has revealed. From the beginning folks "have not kept" the Spirit's revealed will for their lives and in so doing have resisted Him (Acts 7:53).
Do not "resist the Holy Spirit" in your life. Submit to His will. Receive the Holy Spirit by being obedient to His commands.

A Man Full of Faith and the Holy Spirit
Scripture: Acts 6:1-7
Stephen was "a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit" (Acts 6:5). How did the multitude know this about him? They could see the fruit of faith in his life. Stephen was convicted in his mind concerning Jesus. He trusted Jesus from the depth of his being. He surrendered his will to the will of Christ. The multitude could see his faith in his everyday life. They could also see the Holy Spirit in His life. Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control were characteristics in Stephen's life that the multitude could see (Galatians 5:22-23). In seeing these characteristics in his life, the multitude could see that he was full of "the Holy Spirit."

8 Now I, John, saw and heard these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed me these things.
9 Then he said to me,"See that you do not do that. For I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God."

Honest With God
Scripture: Acts 5:1-11
Ananias & Sapphira (Acts 4:32-5:11 & Nadab & Abihu (LEV 10:1-3)
In both cases God was making specific points: Obedience is important!
The Seriousness of Sin: “Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight…” (Psalm 51:4)
Ananias & Sapphira were not honest with God.
1. God sees all: The Omnipresence of God
“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.” (Psalm 139:7-8)
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12-13)
2. God knows all: The Omniscience of God
Heart: “…then hear from heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive, and give to everyone according to all his ways, whose heart You know (for You alone know the hearts of the sons of men)…” (2 Chronicles 6:30)
Giving: “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7)
3. The fact that God is all powerful (The Omnipotence of God) gives us hope! If we are honest with Him, He is “able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us…” (Ephesians 3:20).

With Jesus
Scripture: Acts 4:13
"And when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus" (Acts 4:13).
When others see me, do they realize that I have been with Jesus? When others perceive things about me, do they realize that I have been with Jesus? When others think of me, do they think of Jesus at all?
May His promise be realized in my life: "...and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

Blotted Out
Scripture: Acts 3:11-26
“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord…” (Acts 3:19).
Ancient writing was upon papyrus. Ancient ink used no acid – it did not bite into papyrus as modern ink does – it simply lay upon the top of it. To erase one would take a wet sponge and simply wipe away. When God forgives our sins He wipes the slate clean with the blood of the Lamb!
"I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins" (Isaiah 42:25).

The First Word of the Gospel
Scripture: Acts 2:22-36
Where should we begin? What should we talk about in the middle? Where should we end?
"Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth..." (Acts 2:22).
Jesus is the first word of the gospel. He is the beginning. He is the end. We should never move away from talking about Him.
"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End," says the Lord, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty" (Revelation 1:7).

Both to Do and Teach
Scripture: Acts 1:1
"The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach" (Acts 1:1).
Jesus practiced what He preached, and that made all the difference in His ministry. If I am to be effective in mine, I must walk the walk. I must "also walk just as He walked" (1 John 2:6). When others see Him living in Me, then and only then, will my teaching make a difference.
"For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps..." (1 Peter 2:21).

Thomas' Song
Scripture: John 20:24-29
Thomas did not believe Jesus was alive. He doubted. "Doubting Thomas," some call him.
Jesus longed for Thomas to believe. Eight days after Thomas doubted Jesus appeared to the Apostles. Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing" (John 20:27).
It is unfortunate he is still referred to as "Doubting Thomas." Once he reached, and looked, and reached, and put, he no longer doubted. He believed. And He confessed: "My Lord and my God" (John 20:28).
Jesus longs for you to believe too. And to confess Him as your personal Lord and God. Join with Thomas and sing of Jesus, "My Lord and my God!"

No Fault
Scripture: John 19:1-4
Pilate then went out again, and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no fault in Him" (John 19:4).
Pilate found no fault in Jesus because there was none to find.
If you examine Him closely...you will find no fault in Him either.

Christ's Kingdom
Scripture: John 18:28-38
"My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here" (John 18:36).
Three observations about Christ's Kingdom:
1. The nature of the Kingdom is spiritual.
2. The Kingdom citizen lives in the world but is not of the world.
3. The Kingdom will not be realized here...

For Those Who Will Believe
Scripture: John 17
"I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word..." (John 17:20).
Jesus' desire for us is articulated in His High Priestly prayer recorded in John 17.
1. That we be One (17:21).
The Nature of the Oneness (17:21, 23)
The Purpose of the Oneness (17:21, 23)
The Means to the Oneness (17:22)
2. That we Behold His Glory (17:24)
3. That we be Loved by His Father (17:23, 26)

The Divine Revelation of Truth
Scripture: John 16:5-15
The Bible is not just a book. It is the book. The Bible is not the result of human speculation or philosophizing, but of divine revelation of truth.
"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell your things to come" (John 16:13).
Christ sent the Holy Spirit to reveal the Father's will to the Apostles. They wrote that revealed will by inspiration of the Spirit. Praise GOD for the opportunity to know Him and His precious will for our lives!

Without Him We Can Do Nothing
Scripture: John 15:1-8
"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing" (John 15:5).
Without Him we can do nothing.
1. He holds us up (15:2)
2. He supplies us with life (15:5).
3. He produces His own particular kind of fruit (15:5).
4. And He accomplishes this through the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16-26).
Abide in Him!

Through Him
Scripture: John 14:1-6
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6).
He is the way, truth, and life...
I will to to the Father through Him.

A New Commandment
Scripture: John 13:31-35
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another" (John 13:34).
How He loved them...
1. Unselfishly
2. Honestly
3. Forgivingly
4. Endlessly
If I love you like He loved them and you love me like He loved them, "all will know" that we are His disciples, if we "have love for one another" (John 13:35).

How He Lived, How He Died
Scripture: John 12:23-28
"Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came from heaven, saying, "I have both glorified it and will glorify it again" (John 12:28).
In John 12:28 Jesus articulates the principle by which He lived.
In John 12:28 Jesus articulates the principle by which He would die.
How am I living?
How will I die?

I Am the Resurrection and the Life
Scripture: John 11:20-27
Martha believed in the resurrection. She believed in the last day. She understood the two to be inseparable.
"I am the resurrection and the life." Jesus longed for Martha to understand that He was this now. Present tense. He is "the resurrection and the life."
Apart from Jesus there will be no resurrection or life. Now or later. He is the I AM.

I Am the Door
Scripture: John 10:1-9
"I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture" (John 10:9).
A door is a means of...
1. Entrance
2. Separation
3. Protection
4. Exclusion
What was closed long ago and guarded by Cherubim and a flaming sword - fellowship with GOD and the Tree of Life - have been made accessible by Christ Jesus. I must enter by Him. I must enter through Him.

Neither
Scripture: John 9:1-5
In the fall of the year before He died, Jesus and His disciples came upon a blind beggar in Jerusalem which moved the disciples to ask, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” (John 9:1). They presumed that physical tragedy was always a result of divine judgment on sin. Jesus’ answer, “Neither this man or his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him” (John 9:2) opened up a much broader perspective on suffering. This man’s suffering had a purpose. The disciples had seen it only as a consequence.
Unless there is some direct link to our sin it is very difficult to know the exact origins of our adversity. And that is just as well. For far more important than knowing why we are suffering, is our response to it.

I Am the Light of the World
Scripture: John 8:1-12
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life" (John 8:12).
My response to the Light of the World...
1. Be enlightened - "That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world" (John 1:9).
2. Come out of the darkness - "This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth" (1 John 1:5-6).
3. Walk in the light -"But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:7).
4. Shine - "...that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world..."(Philippians 2:15).
